Evolution of Portable Ka-band Terminals at Crc
نویسنده
چکیده
The Satellite Systems Research group (www.crc.ca/rss) of the Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC) conducts research and development on systems, concepts and technologies suitable for future generations of communication and navigation satellites. Over the past decade, R&D has been carried out in portable satellite terminals operating at Ka-Band frequencies (30/20 GHz). This paper presents the evolution and a chronological overview of the terminals’ development. The three generations of prototypes are presented.

Evolution of Low Noise Receiver Design for Ka-Band Satellite Terminals in Hostile Environments
Low Noise Block Converters (LNBs) are the principal components used in receivers for the frequency translation of incoming signals from a satellite to a modem. With the widespread use of Ka-band satellite terminals in a range of environments, and particularly for SATCOM on the Move (SOTM) and airbourne and maritime applications, the ruggedisation requirements for the hardware have increased. Th...
متن کاملReflectarray for K/ka-band Terminal Antenna
Different satellite systems have been defined to provide broadband communications and internet access in remote geographical areas in Ka band (20-30 GHz) [1-2], being the up-link at 30 GHz and the down-link at 20 GHz. Costeffective antennas are required for fixed and portable terminals in Ka-band. Conventional reflectors are a preferred option to maintain reduced costs. However, the different r...
متن کاملEutelsat Experiences on Remote Terminals for High Speed Mobility in Ku and Ka Band
Eutelsat plays key role in the provision of mobile services over geosynchronous satellites. Starting with narrowband services for land transports, through broadband maritime service until the most recent IP and multimedia services on board high speed means of transport (trains and airplanes), Eutelsat is present in this market for several years, as services provider or just supplying capacity. ...
متن کاملUniversal type approvals for Ka-band ground equipment
Ka-band offers the promise of very low-cost broadband terminals deployed in quantities an order of magnitude greater than the total number of all the two-way Cand Ku-band terminals installed since the birth of satellite communications. For small terminals, installation and commissioning costs can easily overwhelm equipment cost unless the terminal is pre-qualified for interference-limiting perf...
متن کاملTechnical Challenges and Performance of Satellite Communications on-the-Move Systems
113 INTRODUCTION The growing demand from the commercial and military sectors for on-the-move communications at high data rates has generated interest in a new type of satellite terminal. These terminals can provide broadband communications from maritime vessels, trains, airplanes, land vehicles, and other transportation systems. Although the interest in the commercial sector is primarily in bro...
